Under the theme of "Greenish Future", the progress of the three-wheeler electrification pilot project implemented by the Ministry of Transport and Highways, Department of Motor Traffic in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme, was reviewed with the aim of minimizing environmental hazards and restraining the fossil fuel consumption.

In the progress review meeting held in the Auditorium of the Ministry of Transport on 19th February 2024, the stakeholders were made aware about the progress as well as the future measures to be taken in relation to the project.

In this project, the three-wheelers that are currently powered by fossil fuel will be converted to electric, during the process. All stakeholders were consulted in order to get the opinions in relation to the relevant technical, operational and practical conditions.

According to the information expressed by the officials of the Ministry of Transport and Highways, 1,184,423 three-wheelers are currently registered in Sri Lanka and this pilot project is being implemented as a basic activity to popularize the registration and usage of electric vehicles which is aligned to the e-mobility policy to be approved recently.

The event was chaired by the Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Highways, Eng. Ranjith Ganganath Rubasinghe, and the delegates including Mrs. Azusa Kubota, the Sri Lanka representative of the United Nations Development Programme, Ministry of Industry, Department of Motor Transport, Industrial Development Board as well as public and private bankers, Entrepreneurs who currently engaged in producing and assembling electric tricycles in Sri Lanka including representatives of three-wheeler associations and many senior officials of the Ministry of Transport and Highways were participated.

Several three-wheelersthat had been converted to electricity were inspected by the concerned officials along with the discussion.
